I have nothing to add but lots of hugs to anyone of our generation who are realing from these recent passings. I was never an Ozzy fan, but my dad had PD. That is one nasty fucking thing to have.
Luke Perry, Carrie Fisher, Alan Rickman, Prince and Bowie, I BAWLED. They were so much a part of my growing up, my childhood, my formative teenage years.
I've never been an Ozzy fan either, but certainly would never wish parkinson's on anyone. I'm just holding my breath with Michael J. Fox 😞 Loved everyone you mentioned, huge fan of Alan Rickman for sure, also when Robin Williams and John Candy passed away. Big hugs!
Well written, John. I thought yesterday about how Hulk Hogan’s public persona changed as I grew up from naive kid (the I’m a Real American” hero stuff) to the post-college rebellion (when he turned bad again for nwo) and then to middle aged realist (all the many flaws of Terry Bollea). One of the most significant people from the 80s. You can’t tell the story of the 80s without Hulk Hogan.
Thanks Josh! Totally agree with you, the Hulkster left his mark on an entire generation. It's crazy to think a guy I grew up idolizing as a kid is suddenly not with us. He seemed immortal for sure. Grown up me knows we all have a limited time here to love on others, make a few mistakes (hopefully not major ones), and find joy in serving others and being good people!
I am not ashamed to say that nostalgia for people and times gone by has brought me to tears more than once. Tribute videos always get me.
As we age, we also start losing the friends and family who helped make Gen X the coolest generation- for better or worse. As my late Granny Patsy (whose influence was foundational to who I am) often said: “Getting old isn’t for wimps.”
Thanks Gary, and I'm also emotional with tributes for sure. More and more I'm beginning to dread the loss time brings with it. I'm just so grateful I have close friends and family to enjoy life with today. I think Granny Patsy got it right, getting old certainly isn't for wimps. This is why I'm doing my best to find joy in the smallest moments. I hope all is well my friend!

Beautifully written, John. You’ve captured the bittersweet ache of growing older with such warmth and honesty. Such a nice piece.
Thank you Jon, I greatly appreciate that 🙏
This was a great piece, John.

She had that right.
