"THAT '80s DUDE" GETS NOSTALGIC ON SDSU'S "WHERE YA AT?" PODCAST
Spilling the Tea on Creating a Half-Million Strong Community
Hey Nostalgia Nation!
Earlier this week I wrapped an awesome conversation with Josh Suchon
(Class of '96) on SDSU’s “Where Ya At?” podcast, and I’ve gotta say, it was pretty rad getting to share the journey behind “That 80s Dude” and “Nostalgia Nation” with my alma mater. (You can listen to it in the player below)WHAT IT TAKES TO CREATE CONTENT
We went deep on how this whole nostalgia empire started as a fun side project and snowballed into the multi-platform community we’ve built together. We spent some time discussing one of my YouTube videos that has garnered over 100,000 views, and the amount of work it takes from start to finish to write, film, and produce long form videos.
We even broke down the secret sauce behind what makes certain videos blow up while others... well, don't.
MY SDSU DAYS
Josh asked me about my San Diego State University (SDSU) days (English majors represent!) to how I balance my career as the CRO of a company, husband and father of four, with my goals as a new author, content creator, and your friendly neighborhood nostalgia dealer.
btw… in case you didn’t know, my book, Nostalgia Nation: The Definitive Chronicle of Growing Up Gen X drops June 3rd! (Pre-Orders already available for Kindle and Kindle app) And I’m now a Goodreads Author! If you’re on Goodreads please connect with me there.
WHY DOES NOASTALGIA MATTER?
The big question we tackled: Why does nostalgia matter so damn much? Why are we all so obsessed with our “good old days”? And what can today’s college kids learn from our Gen X obsession with looking back?
If you've ever wondered how a content creator manages time and “creates,” how I decide which content is relevant, avoid copyright disasters, or manage to write a book while maintaining my social media presence, this episode has all the behind-the-scenes dirt.
The episode just dropped on “Where Ya At?” – SDSU’s Journalism and Media Studies podcast. Check it out below!
Stay rad,
~ John
P.S. Major thanks to Josh for reminding me I’m officially old enough to be interviewed about “the good old days.” The irony is not lost on me!
I'm consistently impressed with John's backgrounds for his YouTube videos. It truly looks like a 1980s bedroom.
