Great read, John! Until I read your post, Selleck was forever young in my mind, always cruising in his Ferrari with those Hawaiian vibes. He'll always remain that way to me. However, I’m all for him letting it go; as James said, he’s earned it.
Thank you OS, and I totally agree that's the image of Tom I've always had, and still do! I'm at least hopeful he manages his health well so he is with us for a long time. Always admired Selleck... in fact, I'm going to introduce my oldest son to the show soon. Cheers my friend!
Thank you James! You are right indeed. It is very surreal to witness what time does to even the most prolific of people. When I think about aging (and I mostly think about not aging, lol), I think I better make sure I stay in the best shape as I can for as long as I can. I believe once health goes away everything else seems to domino. After I closed my CrossFit gym a few years back I gained 20lbs and you can imagine that's tougher to shed in your late 40s! I hope Tom gets things back to a reasonable degree considering his age. He will forever be Thomas Magnum to me! Thank you for always reading and commenting my friend!
People get old....its just a fact of life. It'll happen to you too. Rather than lamenting their struggles you should celebate them, their accomplishments, and that they are still kickin'.
Tom Selleck has always been considered one of Hollywood's "good guys". Severe arthritis can reduce mobility exponentially and reduced mobility results in weight gain. Selleck looks good for 80 and the scar on his knee is evidence of a knee replacement. I should know, I've had 3, left knee twice! I'm not the hot young woman I once was, but I continue biking, despite my aches and pains.
If the photograph with the close-up of a knee surgery scar is supposed to represent Selleck at 350 pounds, it doesn't do the job. There is no way he's anywhere close to 350, or even 300 in that photo.
As I watch my elderly parents struggle with weight loss and malnutrition, it’s offensive to hear them criticizing Tom’s weight gain. Ok, maybe it’s bad for his joints, but after a certain point in life, being able to eat and assimilate nutrients is a gift. And, he still looks better than 90% of us.
So just give up when you get old??? Fuck that shit, II’ll be lifting until the day I die. If it’s anytime in your life not to give up it’s when you’re old. My dad did and it’s tragic as he is mentally declining fast but he is lazy and he doesn’t give a dam. Leaving it up to everyone else to deal with. His brother (my uncle) who is 3 years older who does care - he still drives and is mentally sharp and lives by himself.
But yea boomer give up and let your love ones have to deal with you. Nice
Do you realize he has an arthritis issue. This man is a saint. Don’t you remember all the scenes where he was doing action shots that most people could never d9 at he’s age at that time. I’m 76 I love Tom Selleck for his determination to keep going. I like him have put on weight. Mine is because I also have arthritis that eats my joints. I have 2 knee, 2 hips and one shoulder replacements. No I can’t be the 5’7”, 130 lb women I used to be, but I can keep living and enjoy The life I have lived and left. These people are not Gods they are human like all of us.
A couple of nights ago we watched an episode* of Buffy in honor of Anthony Head. We realized how many of the cast members were dead- Giles, Principal Snyder, the Mayor, Xander. Getting old isn't for the feint of heart.
* We watched 'Band Candy', the episode where cursed candy makes all the adults act like teenagers and Giles and Joyce summers have a night on the town.
I am in my 70s and still slim and strong but it really takes discipline. I don't know if I would have more or less discipline if I was as wealthy, famous and pampered as Selleck. On one hand, he has an unlimited budget to eat any food that strikes his fancy. I don't. On the other hand, he built a career in no small part on his looks. I didn't.
Are you more likely to let yourself go once you are no longer driven to work all the time if for decades you had to toe the line? Or is that fame and attention addictive making you less likely to want everyone taking about your extra weight.
I don’t care how much he weighs or what he looks like - just stop doing those horrible commercials hawking insurance, car warranties, gold or anything else for christ’s sake!!
When one of those atrocities comes on, I am so embarrassed for him. Surely he doesn’t need money that badly!

Really nice reflection, man. They do indeed say to never meet your heroes, but I think he's earned the right not to be so hard on himself.
Still, though, it's kind of surreal.

The condition of Bruce Willis is heart breaking too. My dad had the exact same type of dementia, it was a long goodbye.

I am a Baby Boomer and I notice it big time. We are all getting older, and some unfortunately don’t.
Just be grateful everyday we are above ground. Enjoy your youth. Time goes by quick.

I won't ever know.
Newsflash: we all age, we all die, we all get wrinkles, we all get tired.

i feel nothing for the man who in his declining years spent them trying to get widows into reverse mortgages.
maybe he can lose some of his weight trying to help them now get out of bankruptcy.
I consider the Jessie Stone films his best work. I’m very glad he did them.
