10 behind the scenes photos from Conan The Barbarian - The film celebrates 43 years as one of the greatest fantasy films of all time
Released on May 14, 1982, Conan the Barbarian is now 43 years old—and I still believe it easily stands as one of the Top 10 greatest fantasy films of all time!
What is best in life?
Directed by John Milius and co-written by Oliver Stone (yes, that Oliver Stone), the film catapulted Arnold Schwarzenegger from bodybuilding champ to sword-swinging screen icon. With minimal dialogue and maximum muscle, Arnold was Conan, and the role fit like a leather glove dipped in testosterone!
Set in a grim, blood-soaked fantasy world, Conan was brutal, bold, and bizarre in all the best ways. The epic score by Basil Poledouris remains one of the greatest ever composed for a fantasy film. It was equal parts operatic and ominous. When I saw this film I wanted to be as big as Arnold… and went out and looked for all of his fitness magazines and his book!
On a budget of $20 million, it hacked its way to over $100 million worldwide, becoming a cult classic that spawned a sequel (Conan the Destroyer) and inspired a generation of D&D players and heavy metal album covers. đŸ˜†đŸ¤£
Oh, and James Earl Jones turning into a snake? Still nightmare fuel.
Thulsa Doom?! One of my favorite movie villains ever!!
Always remember the Riddle of Steel:
What is steel compared to the hand that wields it?
… Now check out some cool behind the scenes photos from the film.
You are inside my head. Just gearing up to show this to my son in the near future. Classic!
I remember seeing Conan the Barbarian in the theatre opening weekend as a young lad. It was phenomenal on the big screen. I wad not old enough for an R rated movie at the time and yes, back then the theatres would not sell you a ticket if under 17. Fortunately I had an older cousin who accompanied me. Good times! Such a fun movie.
